Short answer

There is no single best serum for everyone. In Morocco you mostly find three options: minoxidil, a pharmacy medicine with the most research behind it; cosmetic peptide serums such as Procapil 1.5%, which need no prescription; and rosemary oil, which has one small study behind it. The right choice depends on the cause of your hair loss, so start there.

OptionIn one line
MinoxidilMedicine · most researched · results usually in 6–12 months (AAD) · benefits stop when you stop
Procapil 1.5% (cosmetic)No prescription · 12 drops once a day + 10-minute massage · less shedding often seen in 7–14 days
Rosemary oilNatural · one 6-month trial of 100 people · can irritate if not diluted
PRP (clinic)Injections · monthly sessions at first (AAD) · not a serum
First step for allFind the cause: iron, thyroid, stress, after childbirth, genetics

A serum is one tool. The cause of the shedding decides which tool fits.

Why is there no single « best » hair loss serum?

Hair loss is a symptom, not one disease. The NHS lists illness, stress, weight loss, iron deficiency and male or female pattern baldness among the common causes.

A serum applied to the scalp cannot fix low iron or a thyroid problem. In those cases, the blood test and the doctor come first.

So the honest question is not « which serum is best? » but « which serum fits my cause, my budget and my patience? »

The NHS also reminds readers that people normally lose between 50 and 100 hairs a day. Shedding inside that range is not a reason to buy anything.

What does each option actually do?

Here is a plain-language definition of the four options you will meet in Moroccan pharmacies, parapharmacies and online shops.

  • Minoxidil: a medicine applied to the scalp, usually once or twice a day according to the AAD. It is one of the most studied options for hereditary hair loss.
  • Peptide cosmetic serum: a leave-on scalp serum built around cosmetic actives. Procapil 1.5% combines biotinoyl tripeptide-1, apigenin and oleanolic acid with ginseng, ginkgo, biotin, panthenol, allantoin and vitamin E.
  • Rosemary oil: an essential oil, popular on TikTok and Instagram, that must be diluted before use on the skin.
  • PRP: platelet-rich plasma injected into the scalp in a clinic. It is a procedure, not a product you use at home.

Minoxidil makes sense if you have clear hereditary thinning and you are ready for a long-term medicine with a doctor or pharmacist following you. The AAD notes that if you stop, you lose the benefit and shed more hair.

A cosmetic serum makes sense if you want a simple daily routine without a prescription, accept a cosmetic rather than a medical result, and have already checked that nothing internal is behind the shedding.

Some people use both. If you are thinking about that, read our Darija guide on combining them and ask your pharmacist first.

Does rosemary oil really work as well as minoxidil?

The claim comes from one trial. In 2015, Panahi and colleagues followed 100 people with hereditary hair loss for six months: 50 used rosemary oil, 50 used minoxidil 2%.

At three months, neither group had a significant change in hair count. At six months, both groups had more hair than at the start, with no significant difference between them. Scalp itching was more frequent in the minoxidil group.

That is interesting, but it is one small study, against the weaker 2% minoxidil, and it has not been confirmed by large trials. Pure essential oil can also irritate the skin. Dilute it and test a small area first.

How do you pick the right serum for your situation?

  1. Step 1, rule out internal causes. Sudden or heavy shedding, fatigue, recent childbirth or a strict diet: see a doctor and ask about blood tests.
  2. Step 2, name your pattern. A receding hairline or thinning crown that runs in the family points to hereditary loss, where minoxidil has the most research.
  3. Step 3, be honest about routine. Every option needs months of daily use. Pick one you will still be doing in month three.
  4. Step 4, read the label. Check the ingredient list, the instructions and whether the product is a medicine or a cosmetic.
  5. Step 5, buy from a traceable seller. Pharmacies, parapharmacies or the brand itself. Avoid unlabelled bottles.

Tip

Take a photo of your crown and hairline on day one, in the same light, and repeat once a month. Mirrors lie; photos are fairer.

Who should not rely on a serum alone?

See a doctor first if you have

  • Sudden hair loss in clumps, or round bald patches.
  • A red, painful, scaly or very itchy scalp.
  • Shedding with fatigue, weight change or irregular periods.
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding: ask a doctor before using any product.
  • Completely bald areas: no serum regrows hair there.

Procapil 1.5% is a cosmetic, not a medicine. It does not treat genetic baldness and does not regrow hair on completely bald areas.

Frequently asked questions

Can I buy minoxidil without a prescription in Morocco?

It is sold in pharmacies. Ask your pharmacist or doctor whether it suits you, because it is a medicine and the benefit stops when you stop.

Is Procapil a medicine?

No. Procapil 1.5% is a cosmetic serum. It does not treat genetic baldness.

How long before I see a difference with Procapil 1.5%?

With daily use, less shedding is often seen in 7 to 14 days and density around 25 to 50 days. Results vary.

Is rosemary oil a proven alternative to minoxidil?

One 6-month trial of 100 people found similar hair counts to minoxidil 2%. That is promising but not enough to call it proven.

Can women use these serums?

Yes, Procapil uses the same routine for men and women, and the NHS notes minoxidil can treat female pattern baldness. Ask a doctor during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
